Controversial Nationals candidate for Leichardt, Ian Crossland – or Barney, as he likes to be called - today vowed to cross the floor to fight for his electorate.

Crossland, who made headlines last week for saying his seat would be inappropriate for a female MP, announced that he would take his collegue Barnaby Joyce’s lead and stand strong in Parliament.

"Barney and Barnaby are going to kick arse alright," he said.

"I am no puppet - it is wrong, it is wrong.

"If it is wrong for the community, I will cross the floor. I am kick-arse Crossland.”

When quizzed about his views on women, Crossland replied:

"I'm not a slick politician. I'm Ian Crossland.

"Do I look like a sexist pig? Seriously."

He also denounced the gay-friendly policies of the seat’s current retiring MP, Warren Entsch.

"I think there's more money to be given to the pensioners and aged care and stuff like that, without worrying about that side of grants or whatever," Crossland said.
