Tho Coalition today pledged $10.5 billion for road upgrades over five years in NSW, Victoria and Queensland.

In simultaneous press conferences across the country, Prime Minister John Howard (in NSW), Treasurer Peter Costello (VIC) and Deputy PM Mark Vaile (QLD) announced a series of funding plans for key roadways in each state.

Most of the money would be drawn from a previously announced $23 billion Auslink program, but some new funding is to be included.

Planned spending includes:

- $5.2 billion to help ease road congestion in south-east Queensland
- $2.5 billion to strengthen Victoria’s West Gate Bridge, build a Frankston bypass and upgrade most of the state’s regional highways- $3 billion to build a link between the F3, M2 and M7 motorways in Sydney, and upgrade major roads in Sydney and the Blue Mountains.
